Something that I noticed when I was updating several systems at my lab at once was that xinetd suspended the ftp service because of high load average. I increased the xinetd max_load option to 3.5 hoping to prevent future disables. Keep in mind that this was local network traffic, and I am able to build the full database in about 1 minute so you can imagine the amount of work that in.ftpd was doing. After increasing the max_load, this did not happen again (that I observed). It is possible that enough members of the community were banging away on that system when you were doing the update caused a server suspension. When was this?
