coolness. we were looking for something like this just a few days/weeks ago.

is there code available somewhere?

have you looked at Mindi/Mondo Rescue? www.mondorescue.com
it's a backup system that builds its boot image off the current system
residing on your HDD. very useful for rescue disks (since it uses your
kernel, it'll have all the right drivers and such); backups; cloning
systems, etc.

you might be able to find some good ideas in their code.
