gotcha. 
btw, forgot to mention that I'm running RPM 4.0.2 on that box. I wouldn't
mind upgrading to RPM 4.0.4; but that would require an upgrade to python 2,
and I don't want to hassle/risk that.

well, when I tried --sysupdate on my RH7.2 box (while pointing to a RH7.3
repository), and updated only a few packages; it then spewed a list of *all*
(or nearly all.. 990+ of them) the available packages, plus a few hundred
more all over again. 

sorry that's not very clear. I'm not sure exactly what it was doing, myself.
will write more when I have time to figure it out a bit more.
