Running a 2.4.x kernel on a system originally binary compatible with
2.2.x kernels is bound to give problems. You can't update the major
version of a kernel without at least new binaries compiled on that
kernel and a solid fsck of all drives. All the file util binaries will
have minor incompatibilities with a newer major kernel version for sure.

If you had said RH6.2 w/ 2.4.19 kernel but otherwise "stock", I'd have
seen it straight away :)
