Ok. Update: during eprints perl scripts, my machine goes into this
terrible situation:

Mem:    61424K av,   60136K used,    1288K free,   34232K shrd,    1288K buff
Swap:  257024K av,  196352K used,   60672K free                   21192K cached

Therefore, it seems very clear that the problem is indeed lack of memory,
due to somehow higher requirements from eprints perl/XML/DBD scripts.
I'll have to wait for our 128MB chip to return.
