Right. I hope the other email I just wrote to the list is more clear about
some details. In the context of eprints, I was, for example, also
surprised by the fact that bin/inport_subjects xxxx subjects took so long.
When I had to repeat the operation, just to "delete all" the subjects from
the db, it took a few tens of seconds.  Shouldn't a simple "delete from xx
where xx" in a table with just a hundred or so records be very fast ?

No. DNS lookups are quite fast around here. This hypothesis came to mind
because I noticed that during the time I have to wait for a return from
the web server, the load on the server is not always 100%... actually,
doesn't go very high... which usually means that there is some time
related delay (in opposition to processing), possibly related with
a network operation of some kind, thread synchronization, table
locking timeout, etc...

Well, I have been following pretty closely the evolution of RedHat sparc,
now mainly maintained by Tom "spot" Callaway.
My binaries come almost without exception from redhat rawhide, or redhat
src rpm distributions. Due to be in the middle, aurora isn't yet a good
solution, although I am waiting for release 0.3 for rsyncing with the
redhat sparc linux community.
