Red Hat has already dropped support for a lot of versions, and major
security holes have been discovered in standard packages. If you chose
to stay multiple versions behind, you need to have a plan on how you are
going to deal with those security holes. I have multiple systems at
work that are officially unsupported and it hasn't bit me yet. Yes,
they will all be upgraded when I get around to them, but that's still
months away.

That's true with every operating system ever released. There's no such
thing as a free lunch.

There are other distributions available that have the same goal (such as
debian). You will not find a totally free distribution that makes
backported security fixes available for free for all versions in a
timely manner. That is simply not realistic.
