lmbench causes kernel oops on opteron

Before I investigate this further I wanted to post here to see if there 
was a known issue:

I'm evaluating taroon on a dual AMD64 (model 246 opteron cpus) with 4GB of 
RAM.  

When running lmbench-3.0-a3 (actually during the configuration pass), the 
kernel (2.4.21-3.ELsmp) crashes and spits a callback onto the console 
(irritatingly only the vide console and not serial) but then crashes again 
and scrolls the first crash off the screen leaving a garbled mess on the 
console.  The system then locks hard, and has to be physically reset.  

This is directly reproducible (happens every time - unpacked lmbench, ran 
make && make results, select defaults when prompted, and right after it 
says "Hang on, we are calculating your cache line size." then it locks 
up).

What is the "redhat way" for going about debugging such a problem?  It 
doesn't seem like kdbg is there.  I don't have any messages in the syslog, 
no oops files around, and I don't get anything on the serial port.
