Hence my wondering why it should be necessary - does it mean the RH kernel sources are supplied with a pile of junk build files that screw things up if they aren't mrproper'd first? This would seem to be a bug if so. I might download the source again and see what happens if I don't mrproper but do use one of the supplied configs.
