Andreas Dilger has implemented ext3 online resizing as of OLS2002 last summer,
but it is not merged into the mainline kernel. It may have suffered some
bitrot in the interim. You'll find the patches for 2.4 and 2.5 and
the userland tool (ext2online) in CVS at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2resize/
AFAIK, Andreas still wants to get the code merged into 2.6, and if it proves
stable, 2.4, but he is swamped with Lustre work.
