Re: Automatic Nikud insertion

I am not sure why Dov is trying to do this automatically. Placing NIKUD=20
is exciting and I agree with Jonathan that Dov's program is an excellent=20
start, but I am not sure that this is really needed.


The NIKUD can be placed visually in both fontforge (which I assume is=20
still used for maintaining the sources of the Culmus fonts) and also in=20
a free Microsoft tool called VOLT. Both produce the required GPOS table.=20
From my experience, doing this visual editing for a font does not take=20
long. It is also possible to write a script that will generate an=20
initial placement that can be then adjusted for difficult letter/nikud=20
pairs.


My sense is that this requires less effort than to write an automatic=20
program that does a good job in every case.


Perhaps Dov's code can be used to insert some reasonable initial=20
placements in the SPD file (the fontforge source), which will then be=20
visually edited in fontforge.


I am sorry that I cannot offer to do this myself (I am too busy), but I=20
will be happy to show somebody how to use VOLT and how to partially=20
automate the process with a script that will generate an initial=20
placement for VOLT.
