simple docs

Hi,
 I wrote up some simple docs. I think they are fairly accurate. It's
mostly just an introductory file. If you see anything that needs to be
added or corrected let me know. I'd like to get this in a fairly happy
state and make the public draft release either this week or next
provided people are ok with it.
