problem setting up local yum repo

I tried 'make ARCH=i686' but there isn't an arch/i686 directory with the kernel source. Not sure how/where
to use '--target i686' any pointer would be appreciated.

Your system won't install an i386 kernel for an i686 machine.  If you built 
your updated kernel for the .i686 platform (--target i686) then you'd 
probably see it.
