I'm not sure if you're suggesting this in addition to, or in lieu of  
the patch I submitted. I like the idea, but it's a bit more ripping  
apart of the code. I'll have a look though.

BTW, does anyone know if yum 2.6 properly supports createrepos' -u  
<base_url> option? I wasn't able to get it to work. The base url  
appears in the XML files that createrepo produces but appears to be  
ignored by yum. (2.6.1).
