Overwriting the first 1kb or so of the hard drive with zeros might
erase any funkyness that Win7 might have put there (if it did such a
thing).

I didn't know cfdisk can format as well as partition, but if you can
turn on verbose formatting, it might help show what it's doing. You
could also create the partitions and format them as you did
originally, but before continuing the Slackware install, mount them to
some /tmp directories (/tmp/sda1, /tmp/sda3), and run df -h to see
what the filesystem sizes are just to be sure.

There are other ext2/3 tools (debugfs stat command) that can show you
the size of the filesystem from the superblock, but I'm not sure if
they are included in that bootable install system.
