Well, Microsoft still controls the hardware assemblers. Xubuntu, apparently, leaves the funky partitions alone when it installs. What solved the problem for me was specifying the slow, bad-sector check when formatting the partitions with ext3. This resulted in the full 200G of sda1 to be seen and used; didn't run out of space for the installation. :-) Thanks for your thoughts, Rich
