IMHO, I use Hiren´s BootCD[1] for disk partitioning, because I have 
experienced some troubles with Slack, Debian and FreeBSD installer when 
I partition the disk with the installer on new laptops.
I don´t know what the hell are doing laptop companies, when they install 
Win7 on the new machines, and the way they partition the disks... 
You[Rich] are not the first person experiencing that kind of problems.
