Laptop Does Not See eth0

   I've given up on wireless connectivity with the Sony Vaio and have strung
a temporary ethernet cable (cat5) to the den from the router in the office.
This weekend I'll install an ethernet cable in the walls and across the
attic for a neater installation.

   Anyway, for some reason that I've not before encountered, the host is not
finding eth0, only lo and wlan0. I ran netconfig to ensure that
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf was correctly configured, But, no ethernet!

   Running 'ifconfig eth0 up' returns eth0: ERROR while getting interface
flags: no such device.

   Please advise on what needs to be done to make the interface visible.
