NM is in rc.M (after the 'elif' following wicd) but does not start when the system boots. Running /usr/sbin/NetworkManager still does not allow the applet to be invoked. I'll Google for that error message. I've removed the static IP information for eth0 in rc.inet1.conf so when NM and the applet runs I can configure both eth0 and wlan0. Interestingly, now that I've changed rc.modules to point to rc.modules.local and run /sbin/lilo, clicking on the xfce4 panel icon to shut down/reboot/etc. partially clears the screen then hangs until I briefly press and release the power button. This with the same 3.2.7 kernal and initrd.gz. Sigh. Rich
