Thats what ups does already, works instant on servers, just not on
desktop with KDE, (desktop  starts to console I always enter KDE via
startx, shutdown is instant on desktop if I stay in console, so KDE is
clearly the issue) will try previous suggestions, just need box to be up
for another day before giving it a whirl, since shutting down if box is
only up one day, is quick. 

will report back when I get to test it...
