John, Thought I had respnded to this; perhaps not. JabRef is apparently very sensitive to which version of jdk is installed. Through version 4 java8 (and earlier) were required. The new version 5 requires java11 (a LTS release). Anyway, I gave up on JabRef and removed all packages (but kept a jdk for use by other java applications.) I installed, configured, and am using kbibtex-7.0.7 (because newer versions need a newer KDE than is now present.)
