A computer industry friend suggested that the problem is the DP->HDMI
adapter; it might not be making fully-correct translations. I also have an
Amazon Basic HDMI cable which might be a speed issue.

So, I've ordered a Radeon RX-580 which has both HDMI and DP ports and I'll
buy a high speed HDMI cable. I don't play computer games, but do spatial
analyses and photo editing and the higher memory (8G) and cable quality and
expect the new video card and cable to remove the current issues.
