Hm very strange, I used it directly on a copy of the ftp. with the url:
nfs://ip/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.0

so all installed packages are updated excluding kernel-rpm ans package not 
installed on that system. With -U you would have installed ALL packages for 
which are updates are available, even if they where not installed before.

Hm, without any physical access to that installed system it will be very hard 
to figure out why it won't work the expected way :-(
