This is great! I was beginning to look at what other distributions where more current on the Alpha. I'm happy to stick with SuSE. thank you, andy >>> Stefan Reinauer <[email protected]> 05/13/2003 09:09:51 >>> Dear Alpha community, it's been quite some spare time nights that the old SuSE Alpha Team spent to present you a new version of SuSE Linux for Alpha machines. To safe more greasy words: It's available for download from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/axp/supplementary/8.1/ There are quite a couple of reasons to update now, among them are: * kernel 2.4.19 * gcc 3.2.2, glibc 2.2.5, binutils 2.12.90.0.15 * apache2, bind8/9, .. * kde 3.0.4 * ... SuSE Linux 8.1 Alpha Edition has been tested on several EV56/EV6/EV67 machines, but it might also work on newer/older Alpha systems. To install SuSE Linux 8.1 Alpha Edition on SRM systems, you need to download the installation iso, and burn it to a CD. Find the ISO at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/axp/supplementary/8.1/boot/boot.iso Then you can start installation with "boot dkb0 -fl 0". Please make sure to insert your cdrom device instead of dkb0. For interactive startup you can use the "-fl i" instead of "-fl 0" Installation on Milo systems is a little bit more work. Find a short description and the milo images at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/axp/supplementary/8.1/milo/ Please note: SuSE Linux 8.1 Alpha Edition comes with absolutely no warranty and support whatsoever. We can not provide iso images of the complete distribution at the moment, but ftp installation works fine here and should be viable once the distribution arrived on all mirrors. Feel free to send bug reports, or hints to the SuSE AXP mailing list [email protected]. Best regards, Stefan Reinauer -- Architecture Team SuSE Linux AG
