RE: 8.1 Install - Partitioning problems

Firstly, I may have caused some crossed wires.  I'm not trying to
format from fdisk, I was just using fdisk to see if the partitons were
created.  I was choosing the fs type from within the drive setup portion
of Installation Settings, and reiser doesn't show up.

At one point, fdisk did tell me something to the effect of "Kernel is
using old partition table, you'll need to reboot."  At this point, I'm
thinking I should probably reboot, but it took so long to copy the stuff
from FTP to the ramdisk earlier that I was hoping to not have to go
through that again.  But I will if I have to.

By the way, I also got the following error after following your
advice:

/ # mkreiserfs /dev/rd/c0d0p4
mkreiserfs 3.6.2 (2002)

count_blocks: open failed (no such device or address)


Aborted
/ #

So, for some reason (maybe the fact I haven't rebooted yet) I can't
format my partitions.

If you've been following along this morning you'll know I'm trying to
get an old AlphaServer 1000 running with SuSE 8.1.  With a little help

have managed to get it to boot up from the CD, and connect to the FTP
server.  It has got to the point where I am sorting out the
installation
settings.  Everything looks good, but when I proceed past this point,
it
seems unable to format the partitions.

I have set the partitions up thus:

/boot - 100MB (I know it doesn't NEED to be this big)
swap - 384MB (RAM is 192MB)
/ - everything else, approx. 11GB

If I move over to a second console prompt and launch fdisk, it shows
the partitions are there.  Does anyone know why I can't format them ? 
I
am trying to use ext2 for /boot and ext3 for / since reiser is not an
option in the list of fs types.

What did you mean by "list of fs types"?  Did you mean the list in
fdisk?
If so, that is not where you format for Reiserfs...

Go ahead and create the partition as type Linux (82 iirc), and after
writing
the partition table, execute "mkreiserfs /dev/partition" from the
command
line.
