[8.1]Failiure o boot after install (revisited)

Hi all!
I hope this list still is alive. I desperately need help

Machine: AlphaStation255

I have installed SuSE 8.1 X-times now. And NONE of the installations have 
worked.
I first tried making two partitions swap and /
Beginning on cylinder 3 as described. (Using  a second console to skip YAST)
I have rebooted after creation, i also have mkfs'd and rebooted.
The root system have been tried as reiserfs, xfs and ext3
None worked.

Then i did three partitions, boot, Swap and root
ext2, swap and reiser/xfs/ext3
Same thing

I either get the complaint that i cant load the partiton, or the kernel panic
after vmlinuz is booted

I dont know where to go from here at all.

I have read page after page of configs and howto's 
I have tried every conceivable combination on aboot.conf/swrietboots and 
initrd's
I have tried reiserfs, xfs and ext2/3
Nothing works.

Please; Can anyone walk me through a setup that WORKS!???
Or point me to someone who can...?
