OK, the answer is yes, you can do that, but I can't remember how. If memory servers there was something in the Nautilus/Irongate specific code in the kernel that controlled whether we powered off or just returned to SRM (power off was via APM I think and just requires poking the correct register). At one point we actually changed the default kernel behavior to return to SRM instead of power-off to be more 'Alpha like'.
