Just a guess:
Does the kernel detect the scsi-controller ?
If not, enter the module name into /etc/rc.config:

INITRD_MODULES="<module_name>"

w/o '.o'!

(Some of the SCSI-drivers were compiled in the 7.1 kernel) 

and do the  'mk_initrd'-call  again.
