Strange. As I've allready said before, I'm not an expert for this 
language and characterset things. But somehow it looks that yor system 
is broken. Thats really strange, I have never senn such things before

I also have no more ideas. The last thing you could try is a newer sbl 
version that works with utf8. I could send it to you via PM. Is that OK? 
Have you compiled sbl by hand before (I could help you doing the right 
steps, its not difficult).
