Saschas suggestion is quite reasonable. Please check the locl netork 
connection on the Linux server. Probably the driver hasn't negotioated 
the right speed/duplex connection with your switch.
Try to check this with "mii-tool"!

Could also be a problem on the switch, though. Do you see a lot of 
dropped packages when doing a ping -f ?
