Re: SuSE Professional 8 vs SLES / Standard Server... what am I missing here?

I moved from SuSE Pro 7.3 to SLES 8 two years ago.
I'll never go back to their non enterprise level products, at least for my 
production machines at work.

As far as comparing the operating systems goes.....
The difference is mostly in their patching system.  Patches are tried and 
tested much more religiously (by novell) on their enterprise platforms.
Also, hotfixes are never written for non-sles platforms.

Plus, 3rd party companies are most likely to support their products on 
enterprise-level distros of linux (RHEL, SLES etc)
Domino, for example, only officially supports SLES.

SLES is expensive, but I still think it's worth it.
Novell, the couple of times I've had to call, was very proactive about 
resolving my issues.

Official Linux support is under-rated.

We have 6.5 running *flawlessly* on SuSE Pro 9.1.  We only reboot it every 
couple of months, just in case.

Hi all 

I have researched this issue for days now, and I'm so glad I found this 
list, I'm sure someone would be able to answer me. 

I need to install Domino 6.5.4 at a client and recommended SuSE. Our own 
server has been running happily for three years now on Professional 8, 
but, of course, the client needs the official deal that is supported by 
IBM. Which is SLES 8 and SLES 8 only, it seems. I almost fainted when I 
got the pricing, not to mention the dancing I have to now perform to my 
client, as I quoted them on SLES 9 pricing.... Apart from the fact that it 
is three times the price of Enterprise Server 9, nobody can give me a 
straight answer on what on earth the differences are between the three 8 
releases (SLES, Standard Server and Professional), except for the fact 
that you can't expect a sympathetic ear from Novell when your Professional 
edition crashes (which is quite ok, as we will use external Linux support 
anway). Standard Server sounds like an invention from space, which was 
dropped at version 9 'cause nobody could really say exactly why it exists, 
apart from the fact that you can use it on more than 2 CPU's (we have one 
CPU per box...). Please help out here: what Bad Things will happen if I go 
ahead and recommend Professional 8 to my client, as opposed to SLES 8. 
Also, access to updates (8.1, 8.2) - can I download them with Professional 
or are there limitations with regards to fix packs and other code 
maintenance? 

And, where on earth does one get SuSE 8 at this point in time via download 
anyway?
