I'm not sure why you "wouldn't use 8 at all".  It's solid and has been out 
much longer than SLES9 has (there ARE benefits to that).
IBM does not "officially" support non-enterprise releases of linux, 
although they did support a few revisions of the PRO non-enterprise 
releases at least at one point in time.
"officially" means that it's an easy opt-out for any engineer that's stuck 
on an issue.  My experience is that IBM will generally support 
non-enterprise releases, just not
officially.

There's no reason at all that SLES8 would cost 3x the amount of SLES9.  I 
read that as SLES8 costed three times the amount of SuSE Linux Pro 9.
If you've purchased maintenance through SLES, you're entitled to every 
Enterprise-level release.  For example,  I own maintenance and licensing 
for SLES8.
I can download SLES8 or SLES 9 and use both or either of them 
respectively.

Remember folks, you're not paying for the distribution/operating system. 
You're paying for support on the product and its future (heavily tested) 
updates.

First of all, Domino 7 supports SLES9, which is darned good news. 
Secondly, we have several Domino servers running on SLES9 and they run 
pretty solid. They're not in large sites, though. We have been waiting for 

official support to move to 64 bit, and take advantage of what D7, SLES9, 
will do for DWA performance. From a Domino perspective, SLES provides an 
excellent base for which you know you'll receive updates over a long 
period of time (what is it, 5 years?). This is where Pro isn't as 
desirable. 

IMHO, I wouldn't use 8 at all. But if the client is that insistent, inform 

them of the pricing. You don't control it, and they are the ones insisting 

on it. You cannot use 8.x Pro in this situation because they're insisting 
on supported versions, and Pro is not supported. IBM doesn't support 
non-enterprise versions of linux, to my knowledge. 

If you're worried about SLES8 being three times the cost of SLES9, I 
wouldn't. You'll spend more time figuring out the licensing and logistics 
than you than the difference in cost. It's not a bad product, but it's 
time has passed. I don't know if you can still get 8.x Pro updates, but I 
doubt it.
