Well, unless you're redirecting the output of the server tasks, the NSD is 
somewhat useless.
The NSD will report a fatal error signal (when it is an actual crash in 
domino).  I use the redirected output file to determine what task received 
the fatal error signal (as the NSD will report a PID, but not a name).

Also, the console log doesn't catch everything when it crashes (because 
the console is contingent on domino being up and running).

Because of this, I wrote a simple shell script that I tell domino to run 
when it's crashed.  I simply launch the NSD from the shell script to 
ensure I have all the pertinent information.

I've attached the script here.  It might be worth looking at.

Tim, the NSDs were run automatically on server crash. We sent them on to 
IBM upon request as this was a high priority call with two prod mail 
servers crashing every 10 - 20 minutes. I can't lay my hands on one now.   

We delete bad memories :) 

As a matter of interest  the crashes were related to this technote, 
1192094 - Sending iCal Message to Smart Host by SMTP Causes Domino Server 
Crash. 

We fixed the problem by upgrading to 6.5.4 as this and 6.5.3 FP1 removed 
the problem.

We have sent over a period of a week of server crashes many NSDs (12) from 

Domino 6.5.3/4 on SLES9 to IBM and they can not read them. 
I say again the NSD does not provide readable information to IBM engineers 

when run from a Domino 6.5.x/ SLES9 system. 
Therefore they can not help with the problem therefore they do not support 

it. 
That doesn't mean they are not sympathetic but they just cannot help. Even 

with us being in the IBM Priority Service Program. 
End of story. 

When we begin upgrading our environment to ND7 we will be using SLES9. But 

our existing systems remain on 8. (except the 3 that are unsupported on 
SLES9, and now running fine)

No.  The NSD shouldn't be much different at all, in fact.
I've sworn by NSDs.  We've dealt with a lot of crash issues here.
Sometimes issues are obvious, sometimes they're not.

Quite a while back (R5 days), we identified a bug in domino for linux that 


actually caused a crash when DNS lookups would timeout.
And the log.nsf didn't suggest anything was wrong with the network or dns. 


The NSD did, and therefore saved us a lot of time.
Also, the NSD has be re-written a couple times over.  They found half of 
it didn't even work to begin with.

It's also important to note: IBM fully supports domino on SLES9 if I 
remember correctly.  This includes but by no means is limited to
the NSD working. 

See, using the NSD and the "crash recovery" feature in domino allowed me 
to create a script that collected a bunch of debug information, run the 
nsd, get the server back up and running, then send me a page
after all that was done.

You might consider looking into the NSD.  You can run it while still in 
production, unless you use the -kill option, it will not hurt or touch 
domino in any way.

I'm a full advocate of automation.  I don't like to do one thing more than 


2 times.  :-)

Yes, they won't officially support it and yes, our local IBM guys will 
help us out and do everything they can if our server crashes ;)

What is a question is the matter of an NSD dump - I have be honest, I've 
never troubled IBM with an NSD dump in the ten years I've been in Lotus 
Notes, so I guess it is reasonable safe to not worry about it too much. 
However, would the SLES 9 dump be so much different than the SLES 8 dump? 
Excuse my ignorance, never really looked into one of those nsd files, 
didn't look like light reading...

I find this incredibly hard to believe.  It's safe to say they won't 
"officially" support it.
If you're actively dealing with several IBM engineers that won't support 
that set up I would be interested in knowing.

It's to IBM's advantage to at least look at the code that novell has put 
together for domino.  Heck, I had a simple startup script
written for domino to start up and drump all of its output to a log 
file....

At first, IBM didn't like it, then they requested the actual script.  No 
big deal.
"...will not support it" is really a bold statement.
"....will not officially support it" is much closer.  :-)

It does work fine ... but IBM will not support it. 
And one of the reasons is that if you do have issues/crashes Domino 6.5.x 
will not produce a complete NSD running on SLES9. 
But it will definitely run.
