As range requests otherwise work fine with apache2, and Markus has not
observed any problem with his server, this might not be enough.

I can do range requests from Markus server just fine. Using wget-1.8.2
as of 9.0. Can't you?

If you know a server where it fails and which can be reached from the
internet, please speak up.

You mean, with all those wget versions?
Does the problem occur only with wget?
Can you give me the command line?
