sound but mp3 players hang

SuSE 7.3, kernel upgraded to 2.4.16-4GB SuSE.  Sound works, and I can 
play a CD, and hear the System Notifications (start up sound, open or 
close window sound, etc.).

XMMS hangs when I try to start it.  Gqmpg hangs.  mp3blaster on a 
terminal doesn't play, but at least provides a message "Failed to open 
sound device".

Any thoughts of what to look for?  Thanks.
