VLC-beta broken?

Is there any easy way to tell where fault lies when VLC-beta 1.2.x fails to show the video portion of an mpeg file that Kaffeine has no apparent problem playing correctly (though poorly in fullscreen mode)? I'm on 11.2/KDE3 with AFAICT all AV packages except 1.2.10-7.3 libdvdcss the latest available from Packman. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
