Mplayer should be compiled with win32codec support to be able to
use it. Have no idea which version SuSE ships, but it always
makes sence to download and compile the last available version,
sicnce it developes pretty fast and may have already fixed the
bug you face (if it's a bug in the player). I that all doesn't
help, please run mplayer -v <yourfile.avi> and send the output -
maybe there's a hint WHY it doesn't work...

P.S. Also try to use -vo <output> to choose and output device
typa, may happen that the default is not suitable for your
videocard or libraries. do -vo help to get the list of supported
device types...
