Although the answers others have provided are probably what you need I would like to mention that I get the same thing after running win4lin in full screen mode. Logging out and restarting X seems to bring it back as it should. A few weeks ago there were very good instructions provided - how to compile/install mplayer, if you want to view dvd's as well I suggest you track that message down -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!
