thanks for the replies
i just added the re: myself, i have a feeling when i use reply it's not
getting back to the list.
after installing gnome and then going back to kde i can play mp3s on xmms in
kde. cd's play intermittantly on xmms, no sound with kscd.
i don't really understand the kde questions, i installed the default kde
desktop, i assume it installed it's sound server. i don't remember having the
oppotunity to choose anything. in control center > sound system i have sound
disabled right now but under hardware > audio device alsa was selected by
default.
the kernel is the original from the dvd, i was advised not to update during a
new install. haven't done anything since because i haven't found info
explaining why i should yet. alsamixer settings always come up umuted and
with a decent level for the main values, master, pcm etc. i can't speak for
all of them - there are way too many!!!
