There are three ways to obtain audio from a CD/DVD player.

1. Through the two wire digital output of the drive.
2. Through the three/four wire analog output of the drive.
3. Through the IDE cable.

To my knowledge KsCD doesn't work using method 3.

Method 1 requires the digital input port on the sound card to be 
enabled, this is not the CD volume control on the mixer.

Method 2 is the "normal" setup and uses the normal CD port on the sound 
card.

I haven't looked into xmms ability to play CDs.

There are two sound systems available OSS and ALSA, in the KDE control 
panel you can select which system KDE is to use, there are several 
mixers available to KDE some of them have specific requirements.

How is your CD connected to the sound card, and I also noticed that your 
sound card is sharing an IRQ with part of your USB subsystem.  I know 
nothing about your particular sound card's ability to share an IRQ. But 
it might account for the xmms situation if the problem is that sound 
appears and disappears and appears while the track is playing.

I use method 3 to rip cds using my DVD burner, I can't play cds through 
KsCD and get any sound from that drive.

PS: SuSE won't help on sound card related issues they are not covered 
under the 90 day support provision (I know because I asked for help back 
in the June/July time frame).
