Dear SUSE LINUX - Oracle users,

New on the http://www.suse.com/oracle/ pages are (very short) 
instructions for 10g (database) on SLES-8.

Another piece of information for you in response to todays Intel 64bit 
news item

is that SUSE is going to fully support this chip - SUSE is the 64bit 
Linux leader after all (first to support AMD64, first to support PPC64, 
first to support IBM Mainframe 64bit). The article above has SUSE info 
too. Support for this x86-based 64bit Intel will be available in SUSE 
LINUX Enterprise Server 9, planned for July. SLES-8 will not support 
those chips since it would mean incompatible changes to this product 
that would invalidate all current certifications (incl. for Oracle).

For the next 6 months SUSE/Novell and Oracle will focus on the first 2.6 
kernel based "enterprise" Linux, SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 (July 
2004). Another focus is the creation of documentation and whitepapers 
for running Oracle products on SLES-8, and on the upcoming release 
(probably during Novells Brainshare 2004 show) of orarun-2.0, which is 
much more flexible and functional than the old version and can be 
controlled from within the YAST2 graphical system administration 
interface (it provides these functions, which can be enabled/used 
individually: Oracle start/stop at system startup/shutdown, setting of 
kernel parameters to Oracle specs at system startup/shutdown, setting 
Oracle environment variables and switching (within one shell) between 
different Oracle environments).
