  i discovered the forums a few days ago, but i prefer simple,
text-based mailing lists if i have a choice -- always have.

  in any event, i've solved the issue, and here's the recipe,
documented here:

  i followed the "Manual driver installation" section at the bottom of
that page, popped over to ati.com, followed links until i got to the
appropriate .run file, ran it to build the appropriate .rpm file,
installed the rpm file, then dropped out of X to runlevel 3 and ran:

  # sax -r -m 0=fglrx

  i now have a SaX-generated /etc/X11/xorg.conf file that, from all
appearances, works just fine and gives me my full 1280x800 resolution
for my Xpress 200M. so i'm happy to have resolved this, but it sure
could have been less painful.
