why would installing x86_64 b43-fwcutter pkg drag in 32-bit packages?

  this might just be because i'm still relatively new to suse linux,
but i'm puzzled by the following behaviour.

  in order to get broadcom wireless working on my SLES 11 system, i
downloaded the latest dev build of x86_64 opensuse and, thru yast,
added it as a repository, just so i could get the 64-bit version of
the b43-fwcutter package.

  for fun, i mounted the opensuse DVD and tried to install manually.
that seemed to work, and that specific package had a very short list
of dependencies so that nothing else had to be installed to satisfy
any deps.

  i removed it and, also for fun, decided to install it thru yast for
the practice.  i searched for b43-fwcutter, it was found, but when i
pressed "Accept", i was shown a dialog of "Changed Packages" with
about 30 packages listed, many of them 32-bit.

  what does that list represent?  clearly, installing that package
manually didn't require any further packages, but yast seems to think
a few dozen packages need to be, what, installed?  because of this?
thoughts?
