Writing to CD-R involves variable-sized packets while writing to CD-RW involves fixed-length packets. (Or is it the opposite?) The difference between the two methods is the reason why the Linux kernel hasn't (yet) included the ability to handle CD-R packets. There isn't much more I can say about this.
