Re: Samba on SS4

Karl,

Just to get things going quickly, you might like to try using the Samba 
Web Administration Tool (SWAT).

To get this up and running do the following:
  - Assuming you have the SWAT binaries on your system, either pre-built 
or made from sources.
  - Check that your /etc/services file has a line like:
	swat 901/tcp
    if not, add it.
  - Add the following line to your /etc/inetd.conf
	swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/local/samba/bin/swat swat
    The full path being the one appropriate to where you installed SWAT.
  - One  you have edited /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf you need to 
send a HUP signal to inetd. To do this use kill -1 PID where PID is the 
process ID of the inetd daemon. [Straight from the man page.]
  - Point your browser of choice at http://localhost:901/ and you should 
be in business.

For more information you should try "man swat".

Using SWAT is a good way to get things up and running quickly, and later 
(when you are feeling brave, or after a few cups of coffee ;-) you can 
delve into the mysteries of the smb.conf file and do stuff by hand! 
Although be aware that SWAT rewrites the smb.conf file from scratch when 
you change a setting and do a "commit", so you will loose anything you 
add to the configuration file by hand.
