Running Apache With SSL

I have been trying to get apache to run with SSL on a sun ultra 5 with
Suse 7.3 sparc distro
 
I had installed apache and certificates and configured the virtual ssl
port but when starting apache
and trying to access the ssl port it will not work.
 
I was wondering if this has been a problem for anyone else and how can
this be resolved.
 
what exact programs do I need to have installed. and is there a certain
way this must be configured to work
which I may have missed.
