I'm preparing to do the tao-1 =3D=3D> tao-4 upgrade, and I like to have a bootable copy of my system drive before doing it, in case tragedy strikes. My system is currently on a 40 gig drive. I used dd to copy the entire=20 thing to a spare 100 gig drive (spare 100 gig? wowee!). Afterwards, the partitions all pass fsck with flying colors, looking at the partition table with fdisk I find it looks just like the partition table on the "parent" from which it was cloned (which of course it should). the first partition is marked bootable. but I stick it in as /dev/hda and it won't boot. My motherboard goes thru its normal processes, including attempting to boot from cdrom. normally, immediately after that GRUB takes over within a fraction of a second. But with this cloned drive it just hangs there forever (well, I've let it hang for 10-20 minutes, isn't that close enough to forever??). I've booted the tao CD into rescue mode and done the "chroot /mnt/whatever" thing it says to do and run "grub-install /dev/hda", and that didn't=20 change anything. I used dd to copy the first 512 bytes from the parent drive to the clone and that didn't help. I'm nervous about proceeding with this upgrade (I know, they usually work so I'm probably safe,...) without a bootable copy of my existing system as of before the upgrade. Can anyone suggest how to proceed from here?
