In a round-about way, yes. If  I stuck to U2, at least everything worked, 
but I was stuck at U2. If I upgraded kernels by configuring them manually, I 
was stuck with manually configuring them each time I upgraded.

I was taking the lazy way out and leaving things as they are. It also 
eliminates breaking something else during a manual kernel build.

As I said, I am between a rock and a hard place - no win situation. But 
alas, I may have found a solution by using the SVGA X configuration instead 
of the probed Dell monitor.
