So far so good. I assume that the CD player is gnome-cd, if not could 
you please try it, it should work even if you choose KDE or some 
different window manager.

Indeed, it should have worked without a sound card. Are you using the 
Play button in the CD player program or on the CD drive (some CD 
drives have a Play button along with the Eject one) ? After you press 
the Play button do you see the CD LED lighting up ? This should happen 
while playing an audio CD.

Err, not quite. gnome-cd has a slider on the extreme right side that 
controls the CD drive internal volume. Make sure to move this slider 
all the way up.

OK. The gnome-cd references above also come from a Tao 1 Update 6
system.
