I can't remember which CD player it was really running, but it was which 
ever one starts from the menu option "CD player" by default. It was a very 
simple application.

The CD player did not have a "Play" button. It only had the eject button and 
the volume control. As I recall, the LED did not show continous reading, and 
I did not notice (remember) seeing the LED activity upon insertion of the 
CD.

I will review this the next time I'm at his house. I don't recall noticing 
this either.

As a postfix to this thread, David Parsley has sent some ideas of a probable 
cause related to ISA and Plug and Play cards. His idea revolves around the 
kernel/modules for isapnp not being around anymore. This idea seems to 
parallel the problem and description of symptoms I am seeing. I will follow 
up to the list on this idea after maybe trying a different card.
